The Iowa Board of Regents is looking into the possible sale of a painting by Jackson Pollock called “Mural.” The value of the painting is estimated at $100 million.

The painting was being housed at the University of Iowa Museum of Art until a recent flood forced them to move it to a safe location in Chicago. The potential proceeds from the sale of the painting would pay for flood damage to the arts campus.

Museums usually sell art to purchase more art, not to cover insurance shortfalls. This has many Iowans, art lovers, and art donors furious that the university would even consider such a move.
