Would Be Burglar Failed to Defuse Bomb at Knoxville Museum. Really? Tuesday, Oct 21 2008 

A man claiming to be a special agent with the United States Illuminati was arrested after trying to break into the Knoxville Museum of Art.

The would-be burglar called 911 after getting stuck in an air vent. After claiming “Mission failed,” he continued by explaining that he was trying to defuse a nuclear device that was hidden in a sculpture.

Railroad Exhibit Begins at Museum in Kansas City Tuesday, Sep 30 2008 

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City opens an exhibition entitled “Art in the Age of Steam: Europe, America and the Railway, 1830-1960.” The exhibit, which displays more than 100 train-inspired artworks from painters such as Manet, Monet, Kandinsky, and more, opened earllier this month.

Multi-Million Dollar Painting Lost Thursday, Sep 4 2008 

Wellesley College, in Massachusetts, has lost a 1921 painting by French cubist Fernand Leger. The painting is likely worth upwards of $3 million.

Columbia Museum to Exhibit Paintings for First Time in U.S. Thursday, Aug 28 2008 

Columbia Museum of Art is the first of only five cities that will get the chance to display an exhibit of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings from the Davies Collection that is usually housed at the National Museum Wales. A rare book containing drawings and sketches made by Joseph Delaney is for sale by Between the Covers Rare Books, Inc. in Gloucester City, NJ.

Painting the Polar Landscape Exhibition to Begin Nov. 8 Monday, Aug 25 2008 

The frigid and majestic views afforded by the landscape of the Arctic and the Antarctic were immortalized in the 19th and early 20th paintings of artists such as Frederic Edwin Church, George Marston, and others.

Computer Algorithm Spots Van Gogh Forgeries Monday, Aug 25 2008 

Spotting fakes has long been a neccessity when dealing with paintings from artists such as van Gogh, Monet, da Vinci and others. The art industry may now have some help in identifying fakes.

A Celebration of Spanish Art at Nasher Museum of Art Thursday, Aug 21 2008 

Nasher Museum of Art, on the Duke University campus in North Carolina, recently unveiled a new exhibit called “El Greco to Velázquez: Art during the Reign of Philip III.” The exhibition includes 52 paintings, portraits, carved and painted sculptures of saints, pieces of period glass and ceramics, and more. Of the paintings, there are seven works by El Greco, three works by Velázquez, and works by their contemporaries.

“Battle of Gettysburg” Cyclorama to Reopen to Public Thursday, Aug 21 2008 

For the first time in more than a century, the Gettysburg Foundation and the National Park Service will allow visitors to view the entire “Battle of Gettysburg” Cyclorama. A ceremony and three-day Grand Opening weekend, September 26-28, marks the opening the Cyclorama Gallery and the completion of the Museum and Visitor Center at Gettysburg National Military Park.

Brazilian Police Recover Painting Stolen From Sao Paulo Museum Wednesday, Aug 20 2008 

Brazilian police have recovered the fourth and final piece of artwork that was stolen during a heist at the Estacao Pinacoteca Museum in Sao Paulo. On June 12 three armed thieves walked into the Pinacoteca and held security guards at gunpoint while they stole the artwork.

The stolen paintngs were Picasso’s “The Painter and the Model,” Emiliano DiCavalcanti’s “Women at the Window,” Lasar Segall’s “Couple, and Picasso’s “Minotaur, Drinker and Women,” which was the final piece recovered. (more…)

“Painting in the United States” Exhibit Tuesday, Aug 19 2008 

An exhibit called “Painting in the United States: 1943-1949″ is being showcased at Westmoreland Museum of American Art in Greensburg, PA. The exhibition runs from June 29 to October 19, 2008.

University to Sell $100 Million Painting? Tuesday, Aug 19 2008 

The Iowa Board of Regents is looking into the possible sale of a painting by Jackson Pollock called “Mural.” The value of the painting is estimated at $100 million.

The painting was being housed at the University of Iowa Museum of Art until a recent flood forced them to move it to a safe location in Chicago. The potential proceeds from the sale of the painting would pay for flood damage to the (more…)

Joseph Delaney Painting For Sale Friday, Aug 15 2008 

An important Joseph Delaney painting is being offered for sale in Knoxville, Tennessee. The painting, titled Central Park Skating, was aquired directly from the artist.

The painting, which was put on canvas in 1969, depicts figures ice skating at Wohlman Memorial Skating Rink in Central Park. (more…)
